Yesterday, we watched this epic sci-fi movie on Netflix.
This is Part One: A Child of Fire and the sequel, Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver, is scheduled for release on April 19, 2024.
Its an ensemble cast features Sofia Boutella, Djimon Hounsou, Ed Skrein, Michiel Huisman, Doona Bae, Ray Fisher, Charlie Hunnam and Sir Anthony Hopkins.
The movie is directed, created, and written by Zack Snyder.
"It is set in a fictional galaxy ruled by the Motherworld, whose military, the Imperium, threatens a peaceful farming colony on the edge of a distant moon Veldt. Kora (Sofia Boutella), a mysterious stranger living among the villagers, becomes their best hope for survival. Tasked with finding trained fighters who will unite with her in making an impossible stand against the Mother World, Kora assembles a small band of warriors - outsiders, insurgents, peasants and orphans of war from different worlds who share a common need for redemption and revenge. As the shadow of an entire Realm bears down on the unlikeliest of moons, a battle over the fate of a galaxy is waged, and in the process, a new army of heroes is formed."
Originally, Rebel Moon is inspired by the works of Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai, the Star Wars films, The Magnificent Seven, Battle Beyond The Stars, Riddick, and Heavy Metal magazines; its logo is a homage to the latter. The project began development as a Star Wars film that Snyder had pitched to Lucasfilm, shortly after the sale of Lucasfilm to The Walt Disney Company in 2012. This pitch was to be a more mature take on the Star Wars universe, but alas Lucasfilm and Disney said NO! So Snyder, took his idea and rewrote some it to remove any Star Wars references from it and came out with this epic movie.
Now, this movie is really good but it's not perfect, there are a lot of plot holes throughout the film and it was slightly too long and it could have been shortened.
The actors did a good job in their roles and Sofia Boutella was brilliant in her action scenes, but the movie really did remind me a lot of the classic Battle Beyond The Stars but without it's charm and tongue in cheek.
I am hoping that the sequel will be better and the characters get more to do instead of standing there or fighting, I need to know more about them to actually care about them. Jimmy the Android Knight was interesting and he is voiced by Sir Anthony Hopkins.
In the new year, Netflix will be releasing an extended cut of the film and making it a Cert 18. so that should be interesting to watch.
I was expecting a lot more from this, so I shall rate this movie a score of 7/10.
