This afternoon, we watched this brand new version of the classic The Famous Five on BBC iPlayer.
It came out at the beginning of December and it's a feature length adventure at 1hr30mins.
As a kid, I had the complete collection of The Famous Five Books (21 books in total) and I also own a second set as well as I am a huge fan of Children's mystery books.
I use to watch the original 70's TV series which was quaint for it's time, this new version is more akin to the books and it's set during pre-war Britain.
There is one major difference from the book to the series -
1. George is now mixed race and her mum is now black. And that's the only change as far as I can remember.
The first story "The Curse of Kirrin Island" is loosely based on the first book - "Five on a Treasure Island."
The downside to the series so far is the background music which is synth, which normally I don't mind but it does not suit pre-WWII Britain.
There is a lot of nods to Indiana Jones, National Treasure, and The Goonies with their Treasure hunting and the Templar mythology.
We actually enjoyed it, and the cast of characters of the Five - Julian, George, Dick, and Anne, with Timmy the Dog all did a good job. and my wife and I did spend a lot of time cracking Dick jokes all the time. But that is our sense of humour.
The other two episodes of the series will be shown in the new year.
I shall rate this first episode a score of 8/10.
