This afternoon, we watched Blue Beetle on Prime Video which I rented for £4.99 as a Christmas gift for us both.
I only know of this version of the Beetle from the Young Justice animated series.
In the comic books and this movie, he is the third person to take on the mantle of the Blue Beetle, but this one is different as he is bonded to an ancient alien artifact known as a scarab and wears an alien battle-suit called Khaji-Da, a sentient entity that controls the scarab and therefore the suit and she bonds with Jaime Reyes to become a new hero.
His family is there when he activates the scarab and it bonds with him as he goes on to not only save his family but also to stop the bad guys from their nefarious schemes.
The actor Xolo Maridueña plays Jaime Reyes and he does a wonderful job in his role, including the physical stunt work and motion capture of Blue Beetle.
Susan Sarandon stars as the main baddie Victoria Kord, sister of the late Ted Kord who was the second Blue Beetle.
The secondary bad guy is a character named Carapax, who becomes bonded himself to a scarab and takes on the name of OMAC (One Man Army Corps) and he looks like Maximilian from The Black Hole film from 1979 when he is armoured up.
Jamie's family are brilliant and funny, especially his Nana who is wonderful when she arms herself with a Gattling Gun to fight the bad guy soldiers and the look on the rest of the family when she does was priceless.
The action scenes in the film was awesome and the story was really well written with enough nods to past characters and other heroes in the DC Universe.
We loved this movie and we will watch it again, this was one of the best DC movies we've ever seen.
I am glad that the character will come back in the new DC movies under the control of James Gunn.
I shall rate this superhero flick a score of 10/10.
