Archaeologists digging among the ruins of an ancient Roman fort in northern England just unearthed an 1,800-year-old silver medal bearing the terrifying visage of Medusa. A special type of medal awarded to soldiers for bravery during combat, this phalera would have been intended to ward off evil thanks to Medusa's fearsome image. This would have come in handy to any soldier stationed at this remote fort on the empire's northern edge near Hadrian's Wall where the Romans sought to defend their territory against tribes like the Scots and Picts.
