In Norse mythology, Jormungand (Jörmundgander or Jormungandr, "wolf-serpent") is the evil serpent that surrounded the world, biting its own tail. She was also known as the Midgard serpent, or the serpent of the world, because her body curled around the earth beneath the oceans, and the Earth was called Midgard in the Norse cosmology. The eternal enemy of the serpent was the god of Thunder Thor. Jormungand was one of the three monstrous sons of the god Loki and the giant Angrboda. His brothers were the giant wolf Fenrir, whom the gods had imprisoned, and the goddess Hel, the queen of the underworld. Its size was immense and its venom was very powerful. One day, the father of the gods, Odin, threw the serpent into the sea, where his movements were responsible for deadly storms and tsunamis.
