Irish Mythology - Ulster Cycle.
Cú Chulainn is one of the most famous Irish mythological heroes. He appears in the stories from the Ulster Cycle. He was said to be the son of Deichtine and the god Lugh of the Tuatha De Danann, and the nephew of the King of Ulster. There are several stories of Cú Chulainn’s childhood, which date back to the 9th century. The most well-known story is when Setanta (Cú Chulainn’s birth name) was forced to kill a guard dog in self-defence. The owner, Culann, was devastated by the loss of his guard dog and Setanta felt so bad that he offered to guard Culann’s house until a new dog could be trained. This is how he got the name Cú Chulainn, meaning ‘Culann’s Hound’.
