DOCTOR WHO: THE STAR BEAST

Yesterday lunchtime, my wife and I watched the first of the 60th anniversary specials for Doctor Who, titled “The Star Beast” which was loosely based off a comic strip from Pat Mills and Dave Gibbons in Doctor Who Weekly magazine from 1979 starring the 4th Doctor (Tom Baker) but this time starring in his first appearance of the 14th Doctor (David Tennant). And that is one point I disliked with this, knowing that the Meep was the bad guy, just because he was cute and furry looking does not mean that he was an evil sod.
The story itself was not worthy of being a 60th anniversary special and it felt like a mild early story of the 10th Doctor.
I do not like that the 14th incarnation of the Doctor is pretty much the same as his 10th version, even down with the annoying “What..What..What” rubbish quote that everyone was saying.
The special effects of the Meep (a deranged Furby) were very bad CGI and why was he not called Beep the Meep?
The characters acted like clowns and fools throughout the episode, and we even had characters who didn't seemed fazed by anything. This includes Donna's husband who had never met the Doctor before and yet acted like the whole thing was a big game, even cracking a joke while witnessing his wife and daughter regenerating out the time-lord
consciousness... is he not concerned as to what's happening? They have even emasculated his character by making him a weak man, but yet again, another problem with RTD.
Nobody seemed bothered by the life-threatening battle going on in the street and the Noble’s house between the aliens and U.N.I.T. soldiers. Also, that kid watching from his window would have been filming the whole thing with his camera phone!
And the rapid magical repair of London as the fissures opened up and nobody died or got injured made no sense whatsoever.
We meet Shirley Bingham, U.N.I.T.’s new scientific advisor who is in a cool gadget filled wheelchair and she gets sent to a steelwork factory which I imagine would be full of obstacles and completely impractical for someone with a disability, as we see when she is left by the troops for being unable to climb stairs. Where is the logic for an advanced military organisation to send her... she could have been utilised as a smart character calling the shots from an office or something, so her presence felt forced.
The sonic screwdriver is now all powerful and can make forcefields out of thin air and make visual computer monitors as well. I remember the good old days when the sonic was just used as a tool, and now it’s a MacGuffin that can do just about anything.
Doctor Who has now entered the Panderverse with RTD as showrunner as he has already destroyed the classic villain Davros by getting rid of his disability and changing his past/future as he wanted him not to be represented as a bad guy and in a wheelchair! Any fan of this show knows that Davros was never even in a wheelchair but a life-support Dalek base unit, but WTF, let’s not upset people, shall we? Not a single disabled fan has ever been upset by Davros as he is a cool bad guy, but I digress here as we have the son/daughter of Donna Noble in transexual Rose, who just had utterly emotionless reactions to every single thing that happened. They were forced on to the viewers to make things appear normal as inclusivity is now part of Doctor Who and it is overdone, one way to piss off the fans! The low point has to be asking an alien life form what its pronouns are and getting an answer!
With the new look U.N.I.T, they must have been given a huge budget boost by the government as in Whittaker’s time as the Doctor, they were disbanded due to lack of funds. They do however look like rejects from Judge Dredd, with that sinister looking jackbooted black armour they are all wearing! Major Singh of U.N.I.T. should have yelled just before the battle with the Wrarth Warriors “Sikh and Destroy”.
The return of Tennant and Tate did not seem special to me and they are not my favourite duo of Timelord and Companion in the series. However, this episode was undoubtedly an improvement on Jodie Whittaker’s Doctor Who, but only marginally.
Question - Who in their right mind eats Tuna Madras?
Anyway, a bit of a meh episode and it only raked in 5.1 million viewers compared to the 50th anniversary back in 2013 which raked in 13.1 million viewers.
I shall rate this (un)special a score of 5/10.
