TURNPIKE!

 TURNPIKE! The turnpike keepers cottage was built in 1839 in Gothic revival style for the Chard Turnpike Trust. Located on the A30, Snowdon Hill, Chard, Somerset. Take a closer look in the doorway. The keepers job was to collect the tolls from those who passed by.

Toll keepers were sometimes know as ‘pikemen’ (no not the Pikemen of the Civil War), and even though of the lowly classes, they were entrusted with much cash from the daily tolls.
A beautiful relic of our rural past and not a lot has changed from then until now...
