I’ve just finished binge-watching this five season Sci-Fi Post-Apocalyptic Military Action Show on Amazon Prime.
Season 1 was quite good with a lot of action as the crew of the U.S.S. Nathan James race across the world to find a cure for the Red Flu that has killed 80% of Humans.
Obviously, the series is very American based and what I mean by that is that ONLY America can save the World, Hoo-Rah!
The season does end on a cliffhanger as the ship finally get’s to Baltimore in America and have discovered a cure of sorts.
It is revealed that a Russian had created and weaponised the virus and has made himself “Patient Zero”
Season 2 was decent as it continued the adventures of the crew as they deal with a very different United States as they find out their enemy are the people they are trying to cure and must battle homegrown enemies and the crew of the “evil” British Submarine crew as you know, the Brits are the enemy of the world! Tally-Ho!
Season two ends on a cliffhanger as the medical doctor who found the cure was murdered and they must rebuild America with a newly instated President who is not sure of himself.
A lot of characters do get killed throughout this series, which is refreshing.
Season 3 takes place several months after season 2 ended and the crew of The Nathan James must travel to Asia and deal with a dangerous deranged Chinese President who wants to eradicate the rest of Asia (except for China) off the face of the Earth. They also have to contend with a Japanese Pirate and his band of outlaws as they form an uneasy alliance with them to save their nation.
The main enemy of this season is in fact, the American government as the U.S. President is assassinated by his own people and the country is divided between 5 very evil and greedy governors, who want to rip the country apart and rule their own kingdoms. They even hoodwink the American people including all the armed military forces into working for them.
The crew of the Nathan James must liberate their homeland and bring back Truth, Justice, and Apple Pie, or some other bullshit.
More characters, including some decent ones end up getting killed in this season.
They are not afraid of killing off main characters in this show and the action scenes are big budgeted movie worthy.
Season 4 takes place about 16 months after the last season ended and Captain Tom Chandler has gone into self-imposed exile and the crew have another apocalyptic mission as the world’s crops are all dying off and they need to find a cure and locate the last vial of seeds from the Doomsday Vault.
But don’t worry folks, Captain Tom Chandler comes to the rescue and saves the day for the American People!
The main bad guys in this season are Peter Weller who plays a deranged scientist and the Greek Naval Forces. As you know, Greeks are Bad! Plus they added another bad guy in the mix with a sinister MI5 British secret agent, who really is just trying to save his own country from starvation.
The show has changed production companies between S3-S4 and you can tell by the use of blue/green screens a lot more and the quality of action and locations.
This season has not been that great and hopefully it will pick up with the fifth and final season. Which btw, it does not!
Season 5 is the final season, and it takes place 3 years after the end of the last season, There is a new captain onboard the Nathan James and Tom Chandler is now an Admiral and teaches the new students of the Naval Academy.
The series starts off with hundred of new naval recruits getting killed at Fleet Week as the Naval Port is attacked by foreign aircraft (Pearl Harbour style), and a massive cyber attack that takes down all their computerised weapons and communications.
The enemies are the newly formed Gran Colombia Empire as they want to bring down the bullies that America has become. This season storyline takes place over the course of a year and it includes a full scale war with Colombia, an attack on the American Naval HQ and the President being held hostage.
But don’t worry folks! As the battle weary and tired Admiral Tom Chandler and the brave crew of the U.S.S. Nathan James will save the world from the evil of Colombia!
Now the budget has been reduced for this season as you don’t get to see any naval battles as they are all done on monitor screens with tiny blips and beeps (very lazy), the actual ground force fighting looked like a group of coslayers on a weekend jolly with their scary guns! And the story was all over in 10 episodes. Even the main bad guys don’t get to interact with any of the main cast, which was odd.
A lot of the main characters do get killed off in this season, so maybe it was a good idea to cancel this show. Plus they have
deviated from the original main story and they should never have found a cure in the first season.
It was a shame as it started off strong but they should have ended it at the end of season three.
Overall, a good military sci-fi series that lost it’s way over time.
I shall rate this whole series a score of 7/10.
