DARK WOOD

Myrkviðr is the Old Norse for “dark wood” or “Black Forest”. It’s thought to be a general term for thick woodlands that save very little space for light. The name was anglicised in the 1700s, to Mirkwood. This was later hugely popularised by J.R.R. Tolkien.
