Okay, couple of mini rants coming up...
So most of y'all know I know my way around muscles and training, I bang on abut it enough! 🤷 But I'm no expert in Stroke Rehab, sure I helped my Dad after his, but back in 2002 they did ZERO work on his hand/arm - just focussed on his leg and standing/transferring, so he lost all use of his left hand but he was right handed, so he got by. Now Jason is RIGHT handed and that's the side of weakness, but there's been a glaring amount of omissions in his Occupational Therapy! Okay, yes he has me to help but I don't see why he shouldn't be treated the same as an independent person. Pretty damn sure he would have had instructions on how to do BASIC things if he lived on his own! Brush teeth - can't even hold a toothbrush, brush hair - can't hold brush or precisely touch head, lift a mug of tea - not a chance, pour a kettle/milk jug, stir a cup of liquid, fasten buttons on a shirt, put on a t-shirt, open a door with a handle, unlock the front door - I had to suggest that one! 🙄 Hold a spoon to eat cereal, hold a cloth to wash face, use his own phone - either to text or make calls, take his own medication, do his own insulin with his pen, nothing really useful! I'm assuming, they think I'm just going to do EVERYTHING - which, yes sure I help, but what if something happens to me, they've equipped him with nothing of ACTUAL "occupational therapy" worth! Everything he's done, is great and it's still hard work, but I really expected a lot more input and a full 6wks of help not just barely 3wks and a rushed "Physio" session this morning, then a goodbye!!
I've not given Jason exercises to do as I thought the fine motor control exercises were more important and what the OT and Physio were working on, as said on previous rant, it's not my field of expertise! But having a physio, run through half a dozen "exercises" for Jason to do with a resistance band, in the very last session, rushed through and then signed off, just doesn't seem good enough! They knew from the start I had resistance bands for my own workouts, they said it's too early for that so I held back! But really he could have been doing exercises nearly 2wks ago with his grip strength! Plus, seriously, not actually sure what muscles she was trying to aim to engage with those "exercises" but they won't, trust me! 🙄 Sure, I got knowledge aplenty in the injury rehab area and the building of muscle but it just feels off, when they leave the ACTUAL physio to the very last day. Just cause Jason has me and I "know's what she's talking about" doesn't mean that you leave us to it...
Going from the 1st June, with zero hand movement and minimal arm, to can pick up buttons, bat a balloon, type very slowly and lift a sports bottle....then Goodbye, you'll be fine from here just carry on....seems more than a little half arsed, frankly. Looks like, as usual, we'll have to get through everything else between us, no wonder we are fed up of healthcare "professional" types letting us down....
Rant over....
