A grave in County Leitrim tells the tale of Grace Mcgloughlin who in 1722 was killed by a Dobhar Chú, a terrifying creature that is said to resemble a mix between a dog and an otter, or an otter and a fish.
Her husband heard her scream as she was washing clothes at the lough and ran to her aid. Tragically he was too late and found her mauled body next to the Dobhar Chú.
Filled with anger and grief, the husband stabbed the Dobhar Chú through the heart, but as he did so the creature let out a high pitched whistle. This cry called its mate from the depths of the lough.
Terrified, the man jumped on a horse and galloped for miles, the Dobhar Chú constantly on his tail. Eventually he reached a blacksmith who helped him chop the creature's head off with a sword.
