40 years ago today saw the first publication of City of Thieves with its iconic cover and internal illustrations by Iain McCaig.
WAR OF THE WORLDS: THE ATTACK
Last night, I watched this low budget British sci-fi film on Freevee, loosely based on the classic novel by H.G. Wells.
The film is set in modern times (2022) but it does recreate a lot of the situations and storylines from the novel. The story is about three young astronomers who discover a meteorite has crash landed near their home town and then a Tripod emerges from it and starts attacking the local population.
The military and the police fight back, as the trio must find a way to escape the area with their lives and they encounter perils at every step of their journey to freedom.
I don't know any of the cast members, except for a cameo from Vincent Regan as a deranged priest who has lost his faith.
The acting was alright for what they were given to work with, the special effects were not that bad, but the ending was all over very quickly as the film's runtime was only 1hr25 mins.
It's not a groundbreaking movie but it's more faithful to the original material than that series starring Gabriel Byrne with the same name from the other year.
I shall rate this flick a score of 6/10, more so for the story elements than the special effects.

"Thamugadi (Timgad, Algeria) was designed to be home to 10,000 retired legionaries, but soon outgrew its original allocation. Eventually the city had a population of 60,000.
It was established on a plain at the foot of the Aurès Mountains in the interior of the Roman province of Numidia at an altitude of 1,270 meters (3,369 feet). Thamugadi was founded circa A.D. 100 under the Emperor Trajan. The city was laid out with typical Roman precision in the style of a military camp. Each side measured 355 meters (1,165 feet). The cardo maximus bisected the city on a north-south axis and the decumanus maximus divided the quadrants from east to west. Both the cardo and decumanus were lined with columns. A large public forum was situated in the center of the city where the two main avenues intersected. The Legionary veterans, probably from Legio III Augusta. The city prospered, especially under the Severan dynasty. Thamugadi flourished until it was sacked by invading Vandals in the 5th century.
Because of the remarkable state of preservation of the ruins and the unique example of Roman urban planning with clearly delineated grids, Timgad was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982."

RUFFIAN DICK
Sir Richard Francis Burton (1821-1890) was a notorious superhero (or antihero) and swordsman of the Victorian era. While at Trinity, the half-Irish Burton challenged another student to a duel for mocking his moustache. Burton learned 29 languages and became proficient in fencing. During an expedition to Africa, he was impaled with a native spear, the point entering one cheek and exiting the other, and leaving a scar that can be seen in this photo. He was forced to make his escape with the weapon still stuck through his face. Along with participating in clandestine operations, Burton was renowned for his fighting skills and earned the nickname "Ruffian Dick" because he had "fought in single combat more enemies than perhaps any other man of his time." Burton authored a number of important texts on the sword (including Sword & Bayonet Exercises, a classic book on the history of the Sword, and his "Sentiment of the Sword" about fencing) and translated a number of important Eastern cultural and mythological texts. A scholar, spy, and world explorer, he also had an interest in the occult, native sexual practices, drugs, runes, snake charming, was initiated into an esoteric Sufi brotherhood, as well as into a Hindu sect, all of which made him a subject of controversy and fascination in his time. A linguist, he reportedly learned to identify up to 60 monkey "words," which he recorded in a "monkey vocabulary." In 1886, Queen Victoria made him Knight Commander of St. Michael and St. George.
